The Rest is History

February 3, 2009

So, the big news out of the other Washington yesterday was that Martha Washington was not frumpy. In fact, according to this prominently featured piece in Monday’s Washington Post, the "mother of our country" was kind of hot and her purple wedding-day shoes were edgy and fashion-forward.

I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t be posting this link right now; I’m only half-way through my morning coffee and thus not quite totally sure why reading it made me so instantly crabby. I suppose I’m annoyed that a squadron of historians spent time and money spit-shining her dowdy image, polishing her needlepointin’, slave ownin’, matronly reputation, and doing some fancy age-regression work on her portrait. Sure, yes, absolutely: I want history to accurately reflect the past, and sure, it’s obvious by my presence here that I think self-presentation—which is distinct from physical attractiveness—matters. And I get that in this world, the morning papers do well to sprinkle in a bit of fluff. Still.

I’m going to finish my coffee. You should check out the link.
