“That’s shocking to most people,” says Laura Anderson, founder of Local Ocean Seafoods in Newport. “We have some of the highest quality seafood in the world right out our back door, but it’s bypassing our community.” 

Newport’s story highlights both the fragility and potential of Northwest food systems. 

The Central Coast Food Web 

At the center of Newport’s effort is the Central Coast Food Web, a nonprofit three miles east of town. Its facility, the Yaquina Lab, provides shared freezers, kitchens, tanks, and packaging equipment to small seafood and farm businesses. 

The goal? Keep local products local. Visitors get a better chance of eating wild rockfish, salmon, or Dungeness crab from the Newport coastline. 

“Eco-tourism is not just about hiking a trail or spotting whales,” says Jim King, the Food Web’s executive director. “It is about experiencing a place through its food system and meeting the people who fish, farm, and create.” 

Innovation With Regional Impact 

The Yaquina Lab is the first seafood-focused shared-use food hub on the Oregon Coast, giving producers room to experiment with seaweed snacks, shelf-stable seafood, and other sustainable innovations. 

For Seattle visitors, it builds a bridge between the two Northwest coasts. Just as Puget Sound has its oyster growers and salmon fisheries, Newport is carving out its own seafood identity. Dockside markets, restaurants, and emerging food tours offer new ways to explore the region’s seafood culture. 

“Good things are happening here,” Anderson says. “People come for the ocean views and the seafood. We want to make sure both are here for generations to come.”
