Seattle’s Most Ambitious Companies Aren’t Leasing Offices — They’re Coworking
Capitol Hill is known for lots of things: world-class restaurants, trendy bars, music venues where indie artists make a name for themselves, historic mansions and modern condos. It’s a pretty great place to live, but how is it for work? Strangely, even with all the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, the funky, bustling neighborhood doesn’t have a ton of co-working spaces, and you won’t find any like the Class A office building that houses CENTRL Office.
As the largest independent operator of flexible workspace on the West Coast, the Portland-based company has five locations in its home city, with four in Los Angeles, and one each in San Francisco and Sacramento. In August of 2024, CENTRL Office brought all of its expertise to the competitive Seattle market, confident in the knowledge of what works.
Curating a premium experience with concierge-level service relies on the people — in particular, the general managers at each CENTRL Office. “Our teams are made up of wonderful humans who come to work as they are, and create spaces around them that are welcoming and inclusive,” said Director of Operations Tami Wood. For them, no day looks the same, but between answering questions at the front desk and tidying up the furniture, you can bet they’re keeping the complimentary coffee fresh and flowing.
Kaitee is the lead in Capitol Hill, and she’s the key to building community with intention. When it’s not raining, she’ll organize rooftop yoga. Other member events come about organically, without the stiffness of a stale Taco Tuesday. Those connections span to a personal level, too — you can expect questions about your kids or dogs, or how your trip for that out-of-town wedding went.
As for the actual, physical space, the Capitol Hill location is 55,000 square feet, across three floors of a building that was once occupied by WeWork (prior to its bankruptcy). Wide windows let in natural light to bolster productivity and the open common areas are ideal places to think and let new ideas breathe. Of course, when you need privacy to focus or conduct a meeting, there are secure rooms. Team suites can accommodate up to 22 employees, and there are dedicated desks and monthly offices if you’re a freelancer looking to get out of the house. Amenities include blazing fast Wi-Fi, printers and copiers, well-kept kitchens, and more.
CENTRL Office also offers a “virtual office” plan, where businesses can have an address to put on a business card or receive mail, even if their workforce is entirely remote.
As the best-in-class co-working brand, CENTRL Office appeals to everyone from execs to entrepreneurs, and that cross-pollination is a large part of what gives it the edge compared to other options in town.
“From the start, we really went out of the way to make sure we weren’t hyperfocused on tech companies. It happens naturally now where we have different types of industries, people from different walks of life, different age groups, at different stages of growth,” explained CENTRL Office founder Alex Hughes. “So that translates from startups who are just getting funded to major banks and consulting firms, fast-growing ecommerce brands, large apparel companies, and other organizations that are very big and very set in their path on how they do things, but love to be inspired by the people who are just starting to figure it out, too."
The hospitality, sense of community, and the benefits of being able to work in different environments within one location consistently feature on CENTRL Office’s check-in surveys, with newcomers and long-time members alike, and that’s the kind of performance that quickly spreads by word-of-mouth.
“I think that post-COVID, and especially with the current state of the world, people care now more than ever about where they're putting their dollars and who they're spending their time with,” Wood added.
