Sips, Bites, and Summer Delights: A Perfect Pairing of Wine and Community
Each August, Washington’s wine industry throws one of its most anticipated summer gatherings — and it’s not just about sipping. The Winemaker Picnic & Barrel Auction, hosted by the Auction of Washington Wines, is equal parts celebration, culinary adventure, and community fundraiser. This year’s event takes place Friday, August 15, bringing together wine lovers, winemakers, and top chefs in support of Seattle Children’s, WSU’s Viticulture & Enology Department, and Vital Wines.
Held under the summer sun, the Picnic features over 200 wines — many poured by the winemakers themselves. Guests have the chance to chat with the creators behind the bottles, discover new favorites, and explore Washington’s renowned wine regions through every glass. For those looking to go deeper, the Vintners Station offers rare pours typically reserved for wine club members, while themed tasting bars — including a lively Sparkling & Rosé Bar — highlight seasonal favorites.
But it’s not just the wine that draws a crowd. A curated menu of Pacific Northwest-inspired picnic fare showcases some of Seattle’s most beloved chefs and restaurants. This year’s offerings range from birria tacos by Cava Azul Cocina & Cantina to grilled halibut sliders from Ray’s Boathouse, with plenty of other elevated bites (and desserts) in between.
For collectors and serious enthusiasts, the Barrel Auction is a centerpiece. Guests can taste barrel futures from 35 acclaimed wineries and place bids for a chance to secure cases before they’re ever released to the public.
It’s a vibrant, flavor-packed afternoon — one that raises a glass (and vital funds) for the people and programs that keep Washington wine thriving.
