The Perfect Oregon Coast Summer Road Trip

The Central Oregon Coast highlights this distinctive magic with its unpretentious charm and jaw-dropping landscapes. Small towns once celebrated as the “20 Miracle Miles” in the 1950s now sparkle with modern appeal, offering a blend of raw natural beauty and nostalgic wonder. Pack your bags, fuel your curiosity, and embark on a summer road trip that promises extraordinary sunsets, delectable local cuisine, and adventure at every turn. Whether you’re cruising past Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, or Newport, every turn is a chance to experience coastal magic in its purest form. Here are some not-to-miss regional highlights on your adventures.

Tidepools
Vibrant tidepools provide endless opportunities for exploration, brimming with sea life such as anemones, starfish, barnacles, and other fascinating creatures. The 15th Street beach access in Lincoln City features restrooms, paved ramp access, and stairs leading directly to the beach—just be sure to check the tide schedule before planning your adventure.

Drift Creek Falls
Embark on an easy hike through towering Sitka spruce trees to discover the breathtaking 75-foot Drift Creek Falls. Overlooking the falls is a dramatic 240-foot suspension bridge—a marvel in its own right. The hike is about 3 miles round-trip with an optional Northern Loop for an additional mile. Starting from Lincoln City at the Highway 101 and Highway 18 junction, travel 4.5 miles east on Highway 18, then turn right and head south on Bear Creek County Road for 3.5 miles. Continue for 7 miles on Forest Service Road 17 (NF 17) to arrive at the trailhead.

Sunsets
The setting sun transforms the coastal horizon into a living canvas. With rugged cliffs framing the scene and tide pools echoing the delicate hues of twilight, coastal sunsets captivate with their blend of raw nature and quiet introspection. This shot was taken near the newly renovated Surfland Hotel in Lincoln City. All rooms are oceanfront, and they have direct beach access that takes you right on the beach.

Whale Watching
Gray whales make their seasonal journey south and often move closer to the shore to feed, increasing your chance to witness these majestic mammals.
For optimal viewing, we suggest a short drive to Boiler Bay or Depoe Bay, as both provide several coves for feeding and are a hotspot for whale activity during this prime season. With multiple tours available and even an uptick in Orca sightings recently, there’s no shortage of excitement in these waters.

The Food
There are some amazing options along the Oregon Coast, many with amazing views. Pelican Brewing at Siletz Bay offers a signature PNW crab boil, which includes Dungeness crab, steamed clams, and cold water prawns. Clearwater Restaurant in Newport, Oregon, has some of the freshest seafood on the coast and was recently voted the best waterfront dining on the Oregon Coast. For a more casual fare, try the South Beach Fish Market north of Newport, which has some of the best fish in chips around. Unassuming as a convenience store with a seafood market and restaurant tied to it, but always amazing.

Bonfires
Roasting s’mores under the stars is a ritual that bridges youthful delight with thoughtful nostalgia. There’s nothing quite like a beachside bonfire to cap off a day of coastal adventures. The Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City makes it effortless with their classic bonfire package, combining oceanfront accommodations with panoramic Pacific views, a complimentary hot breakfast, and outdoor gas fire pits for those cool evenings.

Otter Crest Loop
Winding through lush forests, the Otter Crest Loop offers incredible views of the Pacific, including an arch bridge, Devil’s Punchbowl, and a serene nature preserve. At the loop’s end, choose your own adventure: head toward Cape Foulweather near Newport or continue on to Otter Rock. This scenic drive is one of the most tranquil experiences you’ll encounter along the Oregon Coast. More info can be found here.

Sea Lions
Head to the Bayfront in Newport near Port Dock One, or visit the Taft District near Mo’s in Lincoln City, for an up-close look at playful sea lions. Be sure to pack your binoculars, and enjoy the many nearby shops and restaurants. Newport also boasts the Oregon Coast Aquarium, a sprawling 23-acre facility along Yaquina Bay packed with fascinating exhibits and valuable educational resources.

Infinity Spa
Not a fan of the brisk ocean water? No problem. The Inn at Nye Beach in Newport is home to Oregon’s only outdoor Infinity Spa, overlooking a spectacular 180 degrees of endless Pacific Ocean. The spa remains heated all year round, and guests are treated to a gourmet, made-from-scratch hot breakfast delivered to your room daily! With direct beach access and a location in the unique Nye District—renowned for its galleries, coffee houses, and boutique dining experiences—this retreat is a coastal gem.

Excursions
There are some amazingly fun fishing excursions in the summer that run daily. Tradewinds and Dockside Charters both offer services that will not only take you out but will also clean and bag your catch. Angling licences are required but can be purchased onsite or online. For an overnight trip, consider staying at the Ocean House in Newport, which is situated on a picturesque beach cove. They serve a fully plated, made-from-scratch breakfast daily as well as complimentary wine hour, soft drinks, and freshly baked cookies. Also offers a private pathway to miles of beach, waves, and tidepools.
