Newport Is For Families

There’s something about warm weather that makes a lot of people want to pile into the car and explore—lucky for those of us in the Northwest, there’s so much to see and do just a short drive away.
One of these local gems is Newport, Oregon—you’ll find all the charm you’d expect from a coastal haven, but it’s always buzzing with something to catch the interest of everyone in your family.

First off, if you’re ready to get the lay of the land, it never hurts to do it from the top of a lighthouse (Newport has two of them!).
Maybe you’re ready to get up close with mammals and sea creatures? Start by taking in the sea lions off Port Dock One—watch them sunbathe and hear their signature barks.

You’re in luck if you’re hoping to meet an octopus—head to the Hatfield Marine Science Center to experience tide touch pools, simulate a tsunami, or learn more about erosion—all while getting your hands wet! Be sure to say hi to the eight-armed greeter—if she’s receiving visitors.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a must-visit for kids of all ages. Whether you’re into watching the graceful movements of jellyfish, walking into an underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks and other sea life, or communing with otters on the aquarium grounds, this is the place for you.
Ready to get moving? Rent a bike, or a kayak, take a hike in just about any direction, or stroll along the beach or bayfront.

Pick up a kite at The Kite Company (the largest kite store in the Pacific Northwest) and take it for a spin. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to sit down for a few minutes while your kids play at Coast Park.
Maybe you’re ready to absorb some art and culture. Stop into Oregon Coast Glassworks for daily demonstrations and a shop full of the results. If you’re feeling brave, you can book a glass-blowing lesson.

Check out the free rotating exhibits at the Newport Visual Arts Center (and check to see if there are events while you’re there).
For a different kind of culture altogether—check out Ripley’s Believe It Or Not—featuring a huge range of the weird, bizarre, and fascinating. Channel your inner spy to try to avoid laser beams in Laserace, enter another dimension in the star room, and marvel at the giant gorilla made from recycled tires—just for starters.
While you’re in the neighborhood, you’ll want to see Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks, filled with realistic wax figures ranging from superheroes to Taylor Swift, and lifelike sets of favorite movies and shows.

If you’re still standing after all that, it’s time to sit down and enjoy something delicious. Whether you’re after the huge range of fresh seafood, or your crew is more interested in a well-made burger and fries (and everything in between), Newport has you covered.
Whatever kind of family adventure you’re looking for, Newport is your destination. With any luck, you’ll try out some of these favorites, make new discoveries, and leave already planning your next trip back!
