From Iceland to the “Center of the Universe” With Reyka Vodka and the Fremont Fair

A love of originality and perfection.

Presented by William Grant and Sons June 25, 2024

Held in the self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe,” the Fremont Fair treated guests to summer cocktails including a Cosmic Cosmo served with Reyka Vodka during the annual solstice celebration, June 22-23.

The 51st Annual Fremont Fair kicked off summer in Seattle with a weekend of eclectic activities celebrating the quirky community of Fremont, the self-proclaimed “center of the universe.” This year, the fun included a Craft Market, Dog Parade, the historic Fremont Solstice Parade with naked-but-painted cyclists, and a new partnership with Reyka Vodka, which has been a Fair supporter in the past. This summer, more than 100,000 guests flocked to the six-block festival and the Reyka Vodka Music Stage was a highlight of the weekend, showcasing live music by top artists and bands from the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The Fair has always been a magnet for creativity and community spirit, and Reyka Vodka’s celebration of originality, innovation and small batch perfection makes this a perfect partnership.

Local bluegrass band Fog Holler played the Reyka Vodka Stage at the Fremont Fair, June 23, to celebrate summer’s arrival in the northwest.

Pure perfection from Iceland’s first distillery

In the tiny coastal town of Borgarnes, Iceland, set against the stunning majesty of Mt. Hafnarfjall, Iceland’s first distillery is where this small batch vodka is born. For its exceptionally clean, smooth taste, Reyka harnesses glacial spring water from Iceland’s Grábrók Spring. Purer than most bottled waters, this frigid Arctic spring water is filtered by rocks from nearby lava rock fields. This natural material has no tolerance for impurities, and delivers water with an unparalleled purity that’s perfect for vodka.

Seattle band Marmalade helped kick off summer in Seattle on the Reyka Vodka Stage at the Fremont Fair, June 22, with its blend of funk, soul, and groove music.

The Reyka Vodka distillery is located just outside Reykjavik and is powered using geo-thermal energy from the steam of nearby hot springs. This geo-thermal energy captured from deep in the earth supplies power without adding contaminates to the vodka and the world. After filtering, the spring water arrives at the distillery completely uncontaminated; and is then blended with a fine barley spirit.

And finally, to achieve the unparalleled smoothness Reyka Vodka is known for, a rare Carter-Head Still is employed, the first and only one of its kind used to distill vodka. The still’s high level of copper imparts Reyka vodka’s signature smoothness in just one distillation. The structure of the still also allows the distillers to separate out the best portion (the higher-proof heart) of the distillate and discard the rest (the lower-proof head and tail).

This isn’t a large-scale operation; every distillation lasts about six hours and yields only 1,700 liters, making 255 cases of vodka. With small batches, the distillers are able to pay close attention to every detail of the process, ensuring that the end result is of superior quality.

Highly mixable; and delicious on its own

Since it is so clean and smooth, Reyka is an ideal vodka to enjoy on its own, whether chilled or on the rocks. It’s also highly mixable in such elegant cocktails as the Blue Lagoon:

2 1/2 parts Reyka Vodka

1 part blue Curaçao

1 part lemon juice

1/2 part simple syrup

Add all ingredients to a shaker, fill with ice, shake and strain into a martini glass. Skál!

Made in preciously small batches to ensure the utmost quality, Reyka Vodka is 40% ABV and has an SRP of $22.99. Reyka Vodka received 94 points in the 2023 Ultimate Spirits Competition and won Double Gold in the 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards. For more information, visit reyka.com.
