One of a half dozen deliciously idiosyncratic gins in the Hendrick’s Cabinet of Curiosities, Grand Cabaret would be right at home in the spectacular celebrations of Paris more than 100 years ago. Paris in those years was a splendid concoction of trail-blazing art, newly liberal political life, and cultural extravagance — a time that came to be called La Belle Epoque. The world’s most famous nightclub, the Moulin Rouge, had just opened and cabarets, cafes, and dancehalls brought out the city’s aristocrats to mingle with artists and bohemians.

Inspired by opulent Parisian celebrations of the 1900s

Stone fruit flavors, rose scents, and gin was a magical combination in the most opulent of these establishments, and the combination captivated Hendrick’s Master Distiller, Lesley Gracie. She says, “I’m always looking for inspiration and this time I found it leafing through historical recipes for stone fruit spirits - eaux de vies, peach schnapps, cherry liqueurs, and the like - when those indulgent stone fruit flavors were really the ‘in thing’ for those that had the means to celebrate in spectacular style. I played around and found that when you put these different stone fruit flavors together, they give you a nice rich depth of flavor. I added sweet herbs to round the vibrant fruit out. It’s the first time I’ve experimented with stone fruits and I love how it adds a decadent depth of flavor, whilst maintaining a refreshing lightness.”

Hendrick’s Gin is created via an absurdly inefficient, yet quite glorious process. In essence, to make one gin, we first create two. The first is from an old-fashioned copper pot still, yielding a rich and intricate spirit. The second is distilled from a long-necked Carter Head, producing a delicate, more refined spirit. Each still is infused with an unusual symphony of 11 botanicals: chamomile, elderflower, juniper, lemon peel, orange peel, caraway, coriander, cubeb berries, angelica root, yarrow root, and orris root. The gins from the two stills are then married together and graced with a curious yet marvelous infusion of rose and cucumber.

Handcrafted in Scotland in minuscule batches by William Grant & Sons, Hendrick’s is the only gin that uses this marriage of spirits to produce a divinely smooth gin that has both the required character and balance of subtle flavors.
