August 6-12: Farmers Market Week

We’re kicking off Eat Local Month King County with a salute to food system superheroes, aka King County Farmers Markets! Did you know there are 41 farmers markets in King County (with over 25% of farmers from King County) and during market season, you’ll find one (or five!) for every day of the week, except Monday? Farmers markets are the heart of our communities, bringing together farmers, makers, growers, and consumers. They’re a place to learn about local food, get to know the folks who grew it along with the added benefit of helping to preserve farmland and contributing to your local economy and community.

August 13-19: Locally Made Week

We’re celebrating eating and drinking locally this week with a shout-out to a vibrant community of food artisans and local makers! King County is a veritable hotspot with a growing local food and beverage culture that highlights the growth of entrepreneurial food businesses across a diversity of cultures working closely with local farmers to create new products for the marketplace. What’s locally made? Think beer, cider, wine, spirits, breads, baked goods, desserts, ice cream, honey, pasta, cheese, preserved foods, pasta, tea, and non-food products like soap, body care, yarn, fiber, and wool. You’ll find a list of King County makers including those who offer online delivery here:

August 20-26: Farm Week

Did you know that King County has the fourth largest farmer population in Washington State, with over 42,000 acres (about twice the area of Manhattan) in agricultural production? And, of the 39 counties in WA, King County has the third highest number of farms, with over 100 plus products grown here. Farmers (and farmworkers) are at the heart of local food, working farms in the urban and rural areas of King County support over 40 farmers markets, CSAs, local food delivery companies, your favorite farm-to-table restaurant, grocery retail, and the blueberries in your pie. Remember to thank, and never take for granted, the hard-working people that take on the monumental task of growing our food.

August 27-31: Restaurant Week

More than just “farm-to-table," the restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and other eat & drink establishments featured on Eat Local First’s WA Food & Farm Finder in King County have made a commitment and practice of sourcing locally to support the growers, fishers, and artisans who produce the food they craft into a nourishing meal, from the farm – and sea – to our table. Businesses like Project Feast, Anthony’s Restaurants, The Grange, Sea Creatures, Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen and Off Alley, Hot Cakes, and others have made a notable investment of time, effort, and funds to source more consciously, across a diversity of cuisines. Plus, locally-owned restaurants re-invest $79 out of every $100, compared to $31 for non-locally owned restaurants, which means these businesses are leading the way in strengthening our regional economy.
