Allowing homeowners to create beautiful, high functioning spaces.

The canopy bed provides a needed architectural element in this oversized primary bedroom. The lighting was carefully placed to complement the furniture layout.

As a highly experienced  interior design consultant working directly with homeowners, Kirstin DiMartile brings added value to home improvement investments. She provides an invaluable “second opinion” that can clarify decisions about large questions such as layout and space planning for a space being constructed or renovated, as well as the multiple smaller decisions that make the difference between an ordinary living space and one that truly fits those who live there.

DiMartile says, “Everyone wants to know if their decisions are sound. Do the finishes, fixtures and furniture all work together and create a unified space? I work with my clients to prioritize their funds so they get the most impact and move closer to their goals. The best compliment I’ve gotten came from a client who told me, ‘It just really feels like us.’”

She says, “I can advise homeowners on how to ensure their home has a high-end look and function — not just the standard or easy design choices. For example, avoiding outlets in the backsplash is a cleaner visual and is simply more functional. My consulting process is precise, targeted and a small investment which will help ensure project success. More importantly it helps a homeowner avoid costly mistakes or regret.”

DiMartile’s clients include homeowners who are planning or in the midst of projects of any size, either by themselves or with the help of an architect or builder. Although they have not hired an interior designer, they want to benefit from the unique perspective and advice that a designer brings.

This space was designed to look like a semi-formal living room, but function like a comfy and durable family room, all while maintaining a connection to the terrace and view.

Helping clients maximize their investment and end up with a space they love

“I help each client maximize their investment, avoid costly mistakes and move through their home improvement project with clarity and confidence that they will end up with a space they love,” she says. DiMartile specializes in working with three types of homeowners. The first is a client who wants to maximize the beauty and function of their existing space by using what they have, or doing basic renovation themselves and adding inexpensive upgrades such as furniture, paint and lighting. DiMartile can help with direction on how to use what they have, what to buy; and suggestions for upgrades and details such as finish and fixtures.

Another client may be considering a renovation that will make significant changes to their space. They may already be working with a builder or architect and they want to feel more comfortable with the project details before the hammers start flying. For these homeowners, DiMartile provides suggestions on how the floor plan could be modified to accommodate their lifestyle, and reviews architect drawings to find opportunities for general improvement. She also reviews the finishes and fixtures to make sure the overall effect is cohesive and suits the client’s style.

From experience, DiMartile says, “Many people struggle to envision their space by just looking at a floor plan. I provide a trained pair of eyes to help them move forward with the process.”

The large chandelier in this dining room was selected to allow maximum versatility for table placement. Because it hovers close to the ceiling, it is tied to the architecture of the room, not the table itself.

Finally, for clients who have a renovation or new construction in progress, DiMartile also provides advice on how to adapt the project based on budgetary needs or unforeseen job conditions; as well as guidance during any on-site meeting where quick decisions must be made. “For example, the builder may need a fast decision on where all the light switches go,” she says. “It’s very difficult to make the right choice under pressure. Function is one of the key points — getting up from the drawings and going through the process to find out what will make the most difference in the smooth functioning of your daily life.”

With 20 years of experience as a designer and space planner for projects as diverse as high end business offices, custom homes and apartment towers, Kirstin DiMartile has honed her skills in customer service, custom furnishings and top level interior design, working in tandem with homeowners, architects and contractors.

In 2015 she received National Council of Interior Design Qualification certification, the highest standard an interior designer can earn, and founded Habitat Design Studio as a solo designer. As such, she provided  full interior design services to a base of referred customers; and this year, she has transitioned to specialized consulting, with Habitat Design Consulting

Concealing appliances like the refrigerator, dishwasher and hood vent with a cabinet panel or other material instantly gives this kitchen a high-end, custom look.

“I help transform people’s lives by transforming their habitats,” she says. “I believe a beautiful, high functioning home allows people to truly thrive.”

Homeowners can book a free introductory Zoom conversation before moving into the consultation process, an in-person meeting which begins with a tour of the space and a conversation about needs and dilemmas. This is the time for homeowners to share any design materials they have gathered and ask lots of questions. “I want to hear wants, needs, preferences, and ideas,” she says. “The more I see and hear, the better feedback I can provide.”

Once DiMartile understands the space and design challenges, she works with homeowners to talk through possible solutions, sketch design or layout ideas, and look online for additional concept imagery, finish or fixture options.  Finally, notes and sketches produced during the meeting are left behind for the homeowner’s implementation. After the meeting, DiMartile is available for a 30-minute call to clarify design ideas as the project evolves.
