There’s no need to limit yourself to Tootsie rolls and snack-sized Snickers this Halloween. Thanks to Washington voters and legalized weed you can have more than a sugar high on Halloween. Whether you’re going out or staying in, the team at Seattle’s Vela Cannabis has the perfect pairings for whatever your night has in store.
Staying in and Watching Movies
“In enjoy being indoors, binge watching horror films, and handing out candy” says Sean Lee. At the top of his movie recommendations is Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and his cannabis pairing for that film would be either the Purple Snow Bubba pre-roll by Jet City Gardens or the Chem 4 Afghani flower grown by Khush Kush. “Both of those strains are not only tasty, but they will also mellow you out for all the scary parts of the movie.” Sean goes on to admit that Totino pizza rolls and French fries with ranch sauce also pair nicely….
Nikki Reyes suggests Hocus Pocus or Jennifer’s Body, and with either of those she recommends the Strawberry Banana vaporizing cartridge made by Doctor and Crook. “It makes a great pairing when munching on sweets, and when you’re watching one of these scary-but-not-actually-scary movies, you’ll be laughing way more than you should,” she says of this strain which is known for its happy effects.
Staying in and Baking
Erin Green is focusing her energy the kitchen. “As soon as fall hits, it’s all pumpkin all the time.” To transition from work mode to baking mode, she has a CBD dark chocolate from SPOT. “This is my equivalent to a glass of red wine,” says Green. Her favorite recipe right now? Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins, infused with cannabis for an extra treat. “They’re so easy and so delicious”
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
6 tsp (6 packets) of Ruby Cannabis Sugar
¾ cups of granulated sugar (non-infused)
1 TBSP pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup plain pumpkin
½ cup butter, melted
6 oz chocolate chips (Green admits she usually uses more chocolate or adds some toasted, sliced almonds for extra crunch)
Preheat oven to 350. Grease 12 regular-sized muffin cups (or use cupcake liners). Mix the first 7 ingredients really well and set aside. If mixed thoroughly, each muffin will end up with 5mg of THC. “If you don’t mix thoroughly, you’ll have muffin roulette,” cautions Green. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, pumpkin, and butter. Stir in chocolate chips (and almonds, if you desire). Pour over the dry ingredients and fold in just until moist. Distribute batter evenly among the muffin cups and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until springy when you tap the top of the muffins. Cool on a wire rack. Final words of wisdom? “These are best kept in the freezer after they cool off,” says Green, “that way you’re not tempted to eat more than one at a time.” And, Green cautions, keep out of the reach of minors.
Halloween House Party
“My friends and I will dress up, head to someone’s house for a potluck, and dance,” says Jensine San. With an expressive group of friends, some of whom drink and others who don’t, having a good selection of social strains is key. “I recommend the strains Maui Waui or Grape God,” says San. Both of those, whether vaporized or smoked, have cheerful, euphoric effects while also relaxing the body, which are a perfect combination, “especially for a long night of dancing.”
A Night Out
Kaila Randall loves Halloween. She will spend months on her costume and then make the rounds to Halloween parties all over town. If you’re out and about, keep an eye out for Kaila in her Max (from Where the Wild Things Are) costume. She’ll be starting off the night with an upbeat strain, like Alien Asshat by Sky High Gardens. “Don’t let the name scare you, it’s a great social strain that will get you pumped up for the night.” To extend the high, Kaila recommends micro-dosing an edible throughout the evening, such as the pastille candies from The Goodship, or the new Happy Apple Cider soda, which can be shared with friends.

Night Cap
When it’s time to wind down for the evening, there are a few ways to tuck yourself it. Vela recommends either the CBD ginger mints from Mr. Moxey’s or the Beauty Sleep tincture from Ethos. Both options have minimal amounts of THC, which means little to no psychoactive effects, while settling the mind and body. There’s no reason you can’t feel refreshed after a night of fun. It’s all part of the beauty of cannabis.
