Sound Transit announced Tuesday that the light rail extension between Capitol Hill and the University of Washington will open March 19.

The day is strategic: it’s one week before Metro's major restructuring will take place.

"It is going to be a real change in the way people get around this region. Our buses will be able to feed the new system with its dramatically increased capacity, speed and reliability,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said. “Opening the train line a week before those major bus changes will give us a running start on the new era of connected bus and train lines."

The University Link in Seattle will be completed six months early and more than $150 million under budget, according to Sound Transit.
