More Evidence That the Seattle "Establishment" Is a Mirage

The city's left-wing-iest union, the United Food and Commercial Workers 21, announced more endorsements for August's top-two city council primary today. It had already endorsed the council's two left-wing incumbents, Mike O'Brien in Position Six and Kshama Sawant in Position Three. (Longtime progressive Nick Licata is retiring.) UFCW had also already given an early endorsement to strong civil rights incumbent Bruce Harrell in Southeast Seattle's Position 2. Harrell can be more business friendly than O'Brien and Sawant, but with his strong commitment to social justice, he's led on key issues such as cop body cameras and so-called "ban the box" legislation to help ex-felons get jobs.)

However, UFCW's latest picks further diminish the idea that there's any sort of establishment slate in this year's city council elections that progressives are lining up against.

On the latest UFCW list? Three Christian Sinderman candidates, mayor Ed Murray's supposed teacher's pet, and some chamber favorites.

While UFCW went with tenants rights advocate Jon Grant in the at-large Position Eight race (against incumbent Tim Burgess) and with Nick Licata aide Lisa Herbold in West Seattle's Position One race—two picks that seem to confirm the narrative that there's a clear antiestablishment slate in town—they also went with:

Lorena González  in the at-large Position Nine race. González had been tagged as big bad mayor Ed Murray's pick (she was his legal counsel.) González also got the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce endorsement. But UFCW cites González, a civil rights attorney who sued the police in the "Mexican Piss" case, as an expert on employment rights and labor enforcement. She's running against neighborhood populist Bill Bradburd and urbanist Alon Bassok.

Sandy Brown in North Seattle's Position Five. Brown's consultant (like González's) is Christian Sinderman, the supposed tell for establishment Manchurian candidates. Brown, however, a reverend and former head the lefty church council, was active in the gun control and gay rights campaigns. UFCW gave a shout-out to his expertise in social services.

(UFCW did a coendorsement in the fifth, also picking Halei Watkins. Watkins, a standout at a recent District Five forum I was at, is an organizer at Planned Parenthood.)

Rob Johnson in Position Four—Wallingford through the U District northeast to Sand Point. Another Sinderman candidate (and chamber winner), Johnson, despite his Sierra Club endorsement, was also supposed to be a member of the status quo illuminati. Guess not. In endorsing Johnson, UFCW correctly gives him a shout-out as a transportation leader (Johnson is the executive director of Transportation Choices Coalition which advocates for bikes, pedestrians, and transit-oriented development.) Johnson is running against incumbent Jean Godden.
