The 5 Best Mariners Promotions of the 2015 Season

Safeco Field: where bobbleheads, Star Wars, and The Lego Movie intersect.

By Seth Sommerfeld April 15, 2015

The Seattle Mariners haven't exactly started the season with flying colors. Sure, Nelson Cruz has been bombing homers out of ballparks like he's been mainlining Super Soldier Serum (not on Major League baseball's band substance list!), but the pitching has been shaky (*coughFerandoRodneycough*) and the M's have also been shut out twice already. Still, it's very early, and there are plenty of reasons to catch a game or two (or a dozen) at Safeco Field this year. While many of the team's promotions are dumb (Beard Hat night), currently infuriating (I have a couple ideas of unpleasant uses for a Fernando Rodney bobblehead at the moment), or unknown (why aren't there designs for Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager, or Jamie Moyer's bobbleheads yet?), here are five that make it worth taking a trip to the ballpark.

King Felix Bobblehead Night - April 18

Mariners blog U.S.S. Mariner bestowed the moniker King Felix on Felix Hernandez back in 2003 when he was a minor league phenom, and he's more than lived up to one of the best nicknames in sports. Now his royal highness gets the proper bobblehead treatment, complete with a golden crown and majestic cape. It's the silly bobblehead done right. Bonus: Felix is actually the scheduled starter for the showdown with the division rival Texas Rangers.

Salute to Kids Day (Kyle Seager Cream Jersey T-Shirt + The Lego Movie) - April 26

Trying to decide between taking your kid to the movie or to the ballgame? Why choose? At Salute to Kids Day, children 14 and under receive a swanky Kyle Seager T-shirt jersey featuring the Mariners stylish new Sunday alternate color scheme (cream, gold, and royal blue). And while the shirts are pretty rad for the kiddies, fans of all ages can enjoy the post-game screening of The Lego Movie (easily one of 2014's best films) on Safeco Field's massive video board. We imagine this is a dream come true for The Lego Movie co-director, Lake Stevens native, and die-hard Mariners fan Chris Miller.

Star Wars Night - June 19

Safeco Field: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Alright, that might be a bit harsh, but expect the ballpark to be filled with more characters than the Mos Eisley Cantina when the Mariners celebrate Star Wars Night. Fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters (there will be a costume contest), and pros in official costumes will also wander the grounds. After the game, stick around for a special Star Wars-themed fireworks show that's sure to be set to John Williams's epic soundtrack. It should be more fun than bullseyeing womp rats from your T-16 on Tatooine. And if they have any sense, the club should swap the typical hydroplane race for a podracing display.

Father's Day (Mike Zunino BBQ Aprons) - June 21

There are few more classic Father's Day outings than an afternoon at the ballpark. It taps into the heart of America's pastime: getting outside, hearing stories of old players, munching on hot dogs and peanuts, etc. This Father's Day the Mariners also offer a nifty giveaway for all those grill master dads in the form of the Mike Zunino BBQ apron. Designed to look like the Mariners catcher's protective chest protector, the apron should be a hit at any backyard BBQ this summer.

Any King's Court Game

Watching Felix Hernandez work his magic amongst the crazed, yellow fanatics in the King Court has become an essential Seattle experience. It's unlike anything else in baseball (despite other clubs trying—with much less sucess—to copy the Mariners model with their ace pitchers). Electricity fills the air when Felix reaches a 2-strike count and the section collectively rises and starts chanting "K! K! K! K! K!" Sure, it'd be nice if everyone realized they didn't have to hold their K cards over their heads and block views of those behind them (seriously, just hold them at chest level, people), but the buzz makes up for it. And that's not even mentioning how the tickets are a deal: fan receive the King's Court T-shirt and a K card for less than the normal ticket price for the section. If you've yet to serve as one of King Felix's noble subjects, rectify that as soon as possible.
