Youth Arts Grant Program Overview

The Youth Arts Grant Program is an annual fund that provides young artists assistance in developing training programs and workshops for kids and teens. From visual art, theater, dance, and film, these programs give young people an avenue through which they can develop in ways that can't be quantified by standardized tests.

In 2012–13, the fund gave $175,000 to local artists and organizations, serving around 5,000 young students. And only $75,000 of that went to funding completely off-the-wall but totally sincere experimental student films.

Come learn more about the Youth Arts Grant at their annual informational meeting.

The Give Effect

When it comes to charitable donations of time and/or money, perhaps the desire is there but not the relevant knowledge. Who are the organizations that support the causes for which I care most? How do I know my money is being spent in a responsible and productive manner?

One possible solution is curation, says the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through December 31, visitors of the BMGF Visitor Center are able to select through a curated list of organizations and "gifts" to get responsible and civic-minded citizens started down a road of giving back.

The Growth of "American Injustice"

Journalist and former Rolling Stone editor Matt Taibbi has written a book that analyzes the triangulation between wealth, poverty, and crime rates in America today. The Divide talks specifically about the imbalance, in terms of the American justice system, between the rich and poor (i.e., the rich go free, the poor go to jail; etc).

Taibbi's Town Hall talk focuses on concrete examples of this "American injustice," and explains how this pattern has consequences outside of the lives of those directly affected by the double standard.

The Growth of "American Injustice," Tue, Jan 6, 7:30pm, Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, $5
