Mayor Ed Murray at Prop. 1 Victory Party at the Comet Tavern on Capitol Hill

Despite the impressive Republican win nationally, progressive measures carried the day in Washington state and Seattle.

"Tonight Seattle said 'Yes' while the rest of the country said 'No'," Mayor Ed Murray said from a perch above a row of booths at a Prop 1 victory party at Capitol Hill's Comet Tavern.

Here's what the mayor was so gleeful about on what otherwise appeared to be a gloomy night for his Democratic party:

• Funding for preschool slots (Prop 1B)

67.17 Yes (vs a competing unfunded preschool measure, Prop 1A, which got 32.83 percent)

• More Bus service (Prop 1)

58.87 Yes vs. 41.13 No

Also: Universal Background Checks (I-594) is winning at the state level

59.77 Yes Vs. 40.23 ... while a competing anti-gun control measure, I-59,  is losing 54.58 No to 45.42 Yes.

But Washington state was certainly not immune to the GOP wave. In addition to holding the state senate as expected by winning key races with big numbers—such as  Sen. Doug Ericksen's (R-42, Ferndale) 59.3 to Democrat Seth Fleetwoods' 40.7; Republican Mark Miloscia's 56.5 lead over Democrat Shari Song's 43.5 in Federal Way's 30th Legislative District; and state Sen. Andy Hill's (R-45, Redmond) 52.9-47.1 lead over challenger Matt Isenhower—the GOP is threatening or ahead in several state house races, poised to make gains in a chamber long dominated by Democrats. (The Democrats ended last session with a 55-43 advantage and could return to Olympia in January with a slim 51-47 lead if tonight's numbers hold.)

The Republicans ended last session down 55-43, but could return to Olympia in January with a mere 51-47 disadvantage if tonight's numbers hold.

Incumbent Democratic state Rep. Monica Stonier is losing 51.1 to 48.9 to GOP challenger Lynda Wilson; incumbent Democratic Rep. Dawn Morrell is losing to Republican challenger Melanie Stambaugh 53 to 47; incumbent Democrat Larry Seaquist is losing 50.1 to 49.1 to GOP challenger Michelle Caldier; and in the open seat in Tacoma (where incumbent Democrat Rep. Tami Green tried to jump to the senate, but is losing big to incumbent GOP state Sen. Steve O'Ban 54.7 to 45.3) Republican Paul Wageman is beating Democrat Christine Kilduff 50.1 to 49.9. And state Rep. Kathy Haigh (D-35) is just holding off Republican challenger Dan Griffey 50.3 to 49.7.

Other noteworthy numbers:

In Central Washington's 4th Congressional District, mainstream Republican U.S. Congressional candidate Dan Newhouse is ahead of Tea Party Republican Clint Didier in a Republican vs. Republican top-two primary showdown 51.7 to 48.3.

In the 1st Congressional District which stretches from the Microsoft suburbs north to Whatcom County, U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA, 1) beat Republican challenger Pedro Celis 54.8 to 45.2.

Meanwhile, Socialist Jess Spear didn't come close to beating house speaker state Rep. Frank Chopp (D-43, Wallingford), nor did she come close to her mentor Kshama Sawant's 2012 numbers against Chopp (Sawant got 29.37). Chopp is beating Spear 83.6 to 16.4.

Meanwhile, Pramila Jayapal got 66.7 in Southeast Seattle's 37th District.

Republican state Sen. Pam Roach (R-30, Auburn) beat back an intramural challenge from Republican state Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, winning 52.46 to 47.4.
