Today's picks for civic nerds

By Darren Davis November 3, 2014

For Monday

Slow Food Seattle: Talking Mushrooms with Becky Selengut and Langdon Cook

Finally going all in on mushroom foraging this year? Your first step should be to hang out with local authors and foragers Selengut (Shroom: Mind-bendingly Good Recipes for Cultivated and Wild Mushrooms) and Cook (The Mushroom Hunters) as they discuss the best fungi recipes and trade shroom hunting tips.

Or you could just come for the grub: Black forest pate, pickled chanterelles, and mushroom-themed mocktails.

Slow Food Seattle: Talking Mushrooms with Becky Selengut & Langdon Cook, Mon, Nov 3, 7pm, Pike Place Market Elliott Bay Room, 85 Pike Street, $12.50

For Tuesday

Contagion: Ebola Facts and Fiction

West Africa is currently under the largest Ebola outbreak in history. While fleets of brave health care workers rush to the front lines to help beat back the epidemic, we in the states are left wondering if and when the virus will make its way to us in great numbers. These concerns range from the measured ("We should probably start screening flights from affected areas") to the insane ("We should quarantine New York!")

The Washington Global Heath Alliance and CodeMed want to help educate the public and debunk irrational fears with a panel of experts who certainly know more than your reactionary mother-in-law. These panelists include oe DiCarlo, Director of Emergency Relief & Global Security, Medical Teams International, and Dr. John Lynch, Harborview Medical Director for the Infection Control Center.

Contagion: Ebola Facts and Fiction, Tue, Nov 4, 6:30–9pm, Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave, $10

Advance Notice or November 7

21 Acres: Yes, You Can!

Sure, Seattle doesn't exactly experience debilitating winters (yet) where food is scarce. But that doesn't mean you can't participate in the tradition of seasonal food preservation.

The 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living has a skilled kitchen team and a dietitian on hand to show you to safely can food and improve your nutrition through the gray months. It's all analog at 21 Acres. No pressure canners. Just the way grandma did it.

21 Acres: Yes, You Can!, Fri, Nov 7, 6:30–8:30pm, 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living, 13701 NE 171st St, $15
