Today's picks for civic nerds

By Darren Davis October 24, 2014

For Friday

Behind the Table: Meet the Artisans of Pike Place Market

The north end of Pike's Place Market is where you'll find the artisans tables where many locals bring their out-of-town parents, but otherwise breeze through en route to a quick bite at Piroshky Piroshky.

The Pike Place Producers and the Pike Place Market Foundation want you to come celebrate the Market artists this month at Behind the Table, where you can bid on special hand-crafted items and enjoy all sorts of food from some of the Market's favorite vendors, including Le Panier, Pear Delicatessen and Pike Place Fish.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Market Community Safety Net, provider of emergency assistance to Market residents.

Behind the Table: Meet the Artisans of Pike Place Market, Fri, Oct 24, 6–10pm, Market Atrium, 85 Pike St, $40

For Saturday

The Fight to Save Public Housing

Stop grumbling about the Seattle Housing Authority rent hikes you are always hearing about, and learn how to do something about it. Sponsored by the Radical Women and Freedom Socialist Party, this event hopes to educate and organize people around the pressing question: Where exactly does Seattle suggest its workaday citizens live?

Panelists include SHA residents, SHA workers, and anti-poverty advocates. There is a suggested donation of $1–$5, but no one will be turned away. There will also be snacks, people.

The Fight to Save Public Housing, Sat, Oct 25, 6:30pm, New Freeway Hall, 5018 Rainier Ave S., $1–$5

For Sunday

West Seattle Harvest Festival

What better reason to cross the West Seattle Bridge (or, if you live in West Seattle, a reason to say "How about we take the family to SAM next weekend") than to help support local farmers during peak harvest season.

The West Seattle Harvest Festival features some fine wares from over 40 farmers. The market will be open all afternoon, and bring the kids for harvest crafts, a costume parade, and some trick-or-treating. And finally, two words: chili competition.

West Seattle Harvest Festival, Sun, Oct 26, 10am–2pm, West Seattle Junction, 4556 California Ave SW, Free

For Monday

Jim Dwyer: Protecting Internet Privacy

We don't need a massive leak of private celebrity photos to remind us that digital information is subject to breaches of privacy. Concern over privacy grows the more we rely on cloud computing to store our personal information.

In his book More Awesome Than Money, Pulitzer Prize winning author Jim Dwyer explores the rise and fall of a tech startup's effort to protect personal information from Facebook. Come to Town Hall to hear Dwyer weigh in on the future of internet privacy and the realities of commercial surveillance.

Jim Dwyer: Protecting Internet Privacy, Mon, Oct 27, 7:30–8:45pm, Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave, $5

Advance Notice for November 1

Southeast Seattle Climate Justice Forum

There's nothing like a community coming together to define, instruct, and educate itself on important issues, especially when the consequences of these issues extend beyond the community itself.

The Got Green Young Leaders in the Green Movement and the Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment (say that five times fast) team up to discuss the impacts of climate change on the SE Seattle community and action steps that can be taken on the ground floor. Spanish translation available.

Southeast Seattle Climate Justice Forum, Sat, Nov 1, 2–5pm, Southside Commons, 3518 S Edmunds St, Free
