PubliCalendar: Cat People

Today's picks for civic nerds

By Darren Davis October 20, 2014

For Monday

Chuck Palahniuk

Known by most as the author of Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk has also written many other novels as part of the contemporary zeitgeist, including Choke and Diary. He will be presenting his new novel, Beautiful You, at Third Place Books.

Beautiful You has been described, among other things, as "a novel about the apocalyptic marketing possibilities of female pleasure." So if that's your bag, you've probably already bought a ticket. For the rest of you, tickets are free with the purchase of the novel.

Chuck Palahniuk, Mon, Oct 20, 7–9pm, Third Place Books, 17171 Bothell Way NE, $25.95

For Tuesday

Cat People

Halloween is under two weeks away, and you can only watch Hocus Pocus so many times before the charm stars to wear off. How about something a little different this week? And while you're at it, why not support one of the city's great nonprofit film centers?

This is your last chance to catch Grand Illusion Cinema's screening of this little-seen, weird 1940s thriller that Roger Ebert (RIP) called "frightening in an eerie, mysterious way that was hard to define." Cat People is about a Serbian immigrant who marries an American man but won't consummate the union because she's afraid that she'll turn into a cat. We've all been there.

Cat People, Tues, Oct 21, 9pm, Grand Illusion Cinema, 1403 NE 50th St., $9

Advance Notice for October 25

The Fight to Save Public Housing

Stop grumbling about the Seattle Housing Authority rent hikes you are always hearing about, and learn how to do something about it. Sponsored by the Radical Women and Freedom Socialist Party, this event hopes to educate and organize people around the pressing question: Where exactly does Seattle suggest its workaday citizens live?

Panelists include SHA residents, SHA workers, and anti-poverty advocates. There is a suggested donation of $1–$5, but no one will be turned away. There will also be snacks, people.

The Fight to Save Public Housing, Sat, Oct 25, 6:30pm, New Freeway Hall, 5018 Ranier Ave S., $1–$5
