Despite Extra Money to Dahlquist, KCGOP says They Don't Favor GOP Rep. in Race Against Republican Sen. Roach

Eastern Washington Roach Rival, Republican Sen. Hewitt gives $2,500 to KCGOP

By Josh Feit October 15, 2014

Here's some follow up on this morning's Fizz item.

If you missed our AM report: A $2,500 contribution from southeastern Washington state Sen. Mike Hewitt, R-16, Walla Walla, a longtime rival of dissident GOP sate Sen. Pam Roach, R-31, Auburn,  to the King County Republican Party corresponded suspiciously with $2,500 in extra backing from  the KCGOP to Roach's intramural rival state Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, R-31, Enumclaw.  Dahlquist is challenging Roach and the KCGOP, which has endorsed both candidates and says they're not taking sides in the race, had initially given $5,000 to both candidates. However, shortly after Hewitt's donation came in, the party's contribution to Dahlquist increased by the same amount.

KCGOP Chair Lori Sotelo

KCGOP Chair Lori Sotelo tells PubliCola  "No" Hewitt, whose fueds with Roach when he was the GOP leader in the late 2000s included Roach's accusations the he mooned a female legislator during a caucus meeting (!), did not ask that the check go to support Dahlquist.

"It was for overall IE and GOTV," she said, referring to independent expenditure campaigns and voter turnout efforts. She say the extra money to Dahlquist "is not a statement. It's a snapshot in time and other contributions will be coming in during the cycle."

Sotelo confirmed that Hewitt was the only GOP senator who'd contributed to the KCGOP fund, but added, "I'm asking everybody right now."

I have calls and messages in to Sen. Roach and Sen. Hewitt.

It is not illegal to earmark money to a candidate through a separate committee. However, it's illegal to circumvent the $950 campaign contribution limit to legislative candidates for individual donors by earmarking any money above $950. Hewitt has not donated directly to Dahlquist's campaign. And again: Sotelo says Hewitt did not ask his contribution to go to Dahlquist.

The KCGOP reported its $5,000 contributions each to Dahlquist and Roach on October 6. They reported the additional $2,500 contribution from Sen. Hewitt on October 13. They reported getting a $2,500 contribution from Sen. Hewitt on October 5.

Sen. Roach was barred from caucusing with the GOP during the 2013 legislative session thanks to accusations about mistreatment of staff. The controversial senator has a long history of run-ins with her colleagues, who have urged her to get anger management treatment
