Seahawks Superfans: Mr. and Mrs. Seahawk

Jeff and Dede Schumaier like to be different. Like, say, how they’ve decorated their home, top to bottom, in Seahawks paraphernalia. Or maybe how they get up at 3am on game days to paint the Hawks logo across their faces, put on blue-and-green fright wigs, and gear up in jerseys with “Mr. Seahawk” and “Mrs. -Seahawk” across the back. Or—yeah, this is the clincher—their decision to get married at the 50-yard-line of the Kingdome before a game against the Washington Redskins in 1998. “We did our wedding vows, and after we kissed my best man handed me a paper bag with my wig in it,” Jeff says. “So that’s how I rolled for the rest of the day: a white tux and a blue wig.”

After doing their ultrafan thing for nearly 20 years, the Schumaiers have become celebrities themselves: They landed parts in the same Campbell’s Soup commercial that Seahulk stars in, and Jeff says they spent half of their trip to New York for Super Bowl XLVIII posing for pictures with other fans. The notoriety is nice—if a little oppressive at times—but it comes second to their first job: supporting their team. “We try to help them as much as we can,” Jeff says. “It’s what we do. This is our life.”

 His secret to being a good fan: “When we’re on offense, please be quiet.”
