Contrarian Wisdom

You're wrong about GMOs and the City Council.

By Josh Feit October 21, 2013

1. Defeating GMO labeling is the worst thing for the corporate food biz.

The anti-GMO-labeling campaing is outspending the Yes on 522 campaign 3 to 1. And as we reported on Friday, thanks to Washington state AG Bob Ferguson's stern legal complaint, we now have a clearer picture of who the funders actually are. It's not simply the Grocery Manufacturers Association that's kicked in $7.2 million of the $17.1 million. It's Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Nestle, General Mills, Cargill, Hormell, and Ocean Spray, among others—along with the other specific companies we've known about all along: Dupont, Monsanto, Bayer Cropscience, Dow Agroscience, and BASF Plantscience.

And as today's new polling shows, big food science spending appears to be working. A new Elway Poll found that I-522 is leading by just four points, 46-42, after leading by 45 points, 66-21, just five weeks ago.

But here's why the food industry is crazy to defeat this thing: Mark my words, in five to ten years, having a GMO label on your food will be a commercial plus.

With all the futuristic health benefits of engineered crops—enhanced red wine, for example, will have superantioxidants to cure heart disease—shoppers will be reaching for foods with GMO labels on them and shying away from ones that don't.

2. And while that's just my Philip K. Dick/Wired magazine-influenced clairvoyance, here's some contrarianism that's actually based in some polling data from Strategies 360: The City Council, supposedly tools of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, has a 52 favorable rating (27 percent unfavorable.)

For context: Mayor McGinn has a 47 percent favorable rating compared with a 42 percent unfavorable rating.
