Today's picks for civic nerds

For Wednesday

Mixing Business and Politics

The CityClub's upcoming Civic Cocktail will focus on the intersection of business and politics. Panelists include Senate Majority Leader Rodney Tom, D-Medina (session permitting), Howard Behar, former president of Starbucks Coffee International and current Vice Chair of the Washington Business Alliance, Michele Matassa Flores, Puget Sound Business Journal Managing Editor and Knute Berger, Crosscut columnist. The panelists will discuss how local politics, including the upcoming mayoral race, impact Seattle's business community.

Civic Cocktail: The Business of Politics, Wed, June 5, 6pm, The Palace Ballroom, 2100 5th Ave, $10-$15.

Columbia City Stroll

Join a community walk through Columbia City to examine the Unreinforced Masonry Buildings in the area. Although these buildings are packed with charm, their outdated structures pose a public hazard in the chance of an earthquake. A group of community outreach specialists and structural engineers will discuss policy options for their renovation during the walk. The community is encouraged to participate in the discussion on restoring buildings while retaining their historical value.

URMs in Columbia City, Wed, June 5, 10am, S Edmunds St & Rainier Ave S, free

For Tomorrow

Anticipating the Affordable Care Act

KING 5's Jean Enerson will moderate "Washington Business in Reform", the latest installment in CityClub's Health Care 2013 series. The panel of experts include Phil Edmundson, chairman and CEO of William Gallagher Associates in Massachusetts (which implemented its own version of the Affordable Care Act in 2006), Cupcake Royale owner Jody Hall, and Seattle Chamber of Commerce chair Maud Daudon. As Washington state transitions to its own health care exchange, learn how the Obamacare will impact health coverage for both employers and employees.

And For Today

The Candidates on Culture

Find out how what the Seattle mayoral candidates know about Seattle's cultural community at tonight's mayoral forum at Town Hall. The candidates will discuss how to best support the health and vitality of cultural communities, and the positive effects these communities have on Seattle's economic growth.

Seattle Cultural Community 2013 Mayoral Forum, Mon, June 3, 7:30-9pm, Town Hall, Great Hall, 1119 8th Ave, free (reservations suggested)

The Monorail Story

Had enough of the mayoral race? Dick Falkenbury, the cab driver and political activist who wrote the 1996 monorail ballot initiative, discusses his book Rise Above It All downstairs at Town Hall. The book chronicles the story of the monorail's pitfalls and how transportation policy makers can learn from Falkenbury's cautionary tale.
