Today's picks for civic nerds

For Saturday

Fire Station 32, West Seattle

Revamped Fire Stations

Find out about plans to renovate one fire station and replace another at two open houses—one in West Seattle, one in Ballard.

Station 32 in West Seattle, which is almost 50 years old, will be completely rebuilt, while Fire Station 18 in Ballard is getting a seismic and safety upgrade.

Fire Station 32 Design Open House, Sat, June 1, 1-–3pm, Fire Station 32, 3715 SW Alaska Street, free.

Fire Station 18 Design Open House, Sat June 1, 10am–12pm, Fire Station 18, 1521 NW Market Street, free.

Newspaper Complaint

The Washington News Council will hold a public hearing on a formal complaint against the Seattle Times by Vancouver psychologist Dr. Richard Wollert, who accuses the Times of misrepresenting him professionally with "numerous unfair, inaccurate, and unbalanced statements about me and my research in its series "The Price of Protection," about the cost to the state of defending sexually violent predators on McNeil Island, who are locked up even after serving their prison terms under a controversial system known as "civil commitment."

WNC Complaint Hearing, Sat, June 1, 9am-12pm, Town Hall (downtstairs), 1119 8th Ave, freeFor Tomorrow

Bikes in Ballard

Bike over to Ballard for the next Seattle Streets Party, hosted by KEXP and the Cascade Bicycle Club. The street party opens at Bergen Place Park with musical performances, food and drink specials, bicycle spin art and a bicycle-wear fashion show.

Ballard Bike Street Party, Fri, May 31, 3:30–7pm, 22nd Ave NW between Market St and Ballard Ave NW and Bergen Place Park, free.

The Past and Future of Civil Engineering

During this weekend's (perhaps inauspiciously timed) UW National Student Steel Bridge Competition, the brightest student engineers from around the country will compete in model bridge construction at the University of Washington Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

During the competition, viewers can take an in-depth look at the construction of Washington's greatest engineering feats in celebration of The American Society of Civil Engineers Seattle Section's centennial, honoring the civil engineers behind the Ballard Locks, the Stevens Pass railroad tunnels, the hydroelectric project at Snoqualmie Falls, and more.

2013 National Student Steel Bridge Competition, Fri, May 31– Sat, June 1, schedule of events online, Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, 3870 Montlake Blvd NE, free.

And For Today

A Progressive Party

The tenants at the Vance Building invite you to their annual open house, the Tour de Vance.

The Tour de Vance. Thurs, May 30, 5:30-7:30pm, Vance Building, 1402 3rd Ave, free.
