Today's picks for civic nerds

For Monday

Memorial Day at Magnuson Park

Join The University of Washigton Sempler Fidelis Society and Husky United Military Veterans for their 4th annual Wounded Warrior Dash. This isn't your typical 5K charity race– all participants will have the option of competing as a four person "fire team" required to carry a "wounded" member along the way. The Wounded Warrior Dash ends with a BBQ at Magnuson Beach, featuring musical entertainment and prizes. All proceeds go to assisting wounded and transitioning veterans.

Wounded Warrior Dash, Mon, May 27, race starts at 10am, Warren G. Magnuson Park, 7400 Sandpoint Way NE, students $25, veterans $30, general public $35

For Sunday

Food Drive

Open you cupboards for the community! Bring your extra canned goods and nonperishable items to Seattle area Bartell's drugstores now through June 1st.

Bartell's Community Food Drive benefits Food Lifeline, a local organization focused on bringing nurtition to low-income families in Western Washington. The summer is especially important for food banks, because most low-income families have to provide for their children without the support of subsized school lunches.

A list of most needed items can be found on the food drive website.

Bartell's Community Food Drive, May 19–June 1, all Bartell's Drugs locations

For Tomorrow

For all Folks

This much-loved hippie fest features food from around the globe, entertainers of all kinds, and folky crafts. And the 42nd annual Folklife Festival debuts a multimedia program called Washington Works, which focuses on stories and histories of the labor movement in Washington state.

Visit the Folklife Festival website for a full schedule of events, vendors and performances.

Northwest Folklife Festival, Fri, May 24- Mon, May 27, 11am-9pm, Seattle Center, 305 Harrison St, free (donations accepted).

And For Today

Olympic Experiences

With "Out of the Mist," a documentary featuring the natural beauty of the Olympic Penninsula, filmmakers Robert and Kathy Chrestensen make the case for new Wilderness and Wild and Scenic River designations and watershed protections on the Olympic Peninsula with breathtaking footage taken over years of backpacking in the Olympics.

Check out the trailer and more information about the film on Meaningful Movies' website

Meaningful Movies: "Out of the Mist" Olympic Wilderness Stories, Fri, May 24, 7-9:30pm, Keystone Congregational United Church of Christ, 5019 Keystone Place N, free (donations accepted)

Police Cameras

Weigh in on whether the Seattle Police Department should activate a series of police security cameras that were installed along the West Seattle to Ballard waterfront but never turned on. Some residents and civil-liberties advocates worry that the cameras, which are funded by federal port security dollars and ostensibly aimed at improving security at Port of Seattle facilities along the waterfront, could violate resdidents' right to privacy.

Port Security Grant public meeting, Fri, May 24, 7pm, Golden Gardens Bathhouse, 8498 Seaview Pl. NW, free.
