PubliCalender: (Bike) Safety in Numbers; Plus Patty Murray

By Josh Feit September 5, 2012

Our Picks for Civic Nerds.

We've been promoting a lot of biking events in the PubliCalendar lately (who knows? maybe we'll even re-launch our long-lost and beloved BikeNerd column), but here's another great event. And this one is for brand-new bikers.

Bike Safety in Numbers

I Bike SEA, a North Seattle group that wants to destigmatize biking, is holding a kickoff party for its two-week project: Organizing groups of new bikers in North Seattle ("especially you, ladies," the announcement says) to commute to work downtown together in "bike pools."

The kickoff event, in Pioneer Square's Nord Alley, will feature biking tips and refreshments. And a maiden bike pool commute back to North Seattle.

I Bike SEA Kick-Off, Thursday, September 6 at 5:30, Nord Alley in Pioneer Square, 314 1st S.

And don't forget about today's PubliCal recommendation (it's another biking thing):

Design a
Bike Route in Rainier Valley

Rainier Valley Greenways, a community group that's trying to make Rainier Valley more bike and ped friendly, is hooking up with Bike Works, the non-profit bike Mecca in Columbia City that gets kids involved in biking, to find a winning plan for a greenway (aka, bike path) in Rainier Valley.

The two groups are sponsoring an event—cookies, snacks, and drinks provided—at the Rainier Beach Library to get ideas from the public. And that means—maps are also provided; because they're asking you to sketch out your best biking and walking routes on a map complete with awesome spots to bike and walk plus hazardous things to look out for.

After they collect all the maps, they'll figure out a plan for the best greenway and, applying for cash from the city's bike master plan program, lobby to make it happen.

Rainier Valley Greenways, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rainier Beach Library Meeting Room, 9125 Rainier Ave S.

And one more for today:

Patty Murray at the DNC

Tune in U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) who's going to make an impassioned defense of the relay-race version of the American Dream (as opposed to the sprint or marathon version).

Growing up in Bothell as the daughter of a veteran is going to figure prominently in her defense of government services, we think.
