2012 Election
Obsessed with Ed Reform? Here are Some Things to Watch for Tonight.
Teachers' Union money and Stand for Children money will be tested in the primary
"Ed reform," the controversial issue that splits Democrats, freaks out unions, and has given Republicans an entree into an issue that used to make them look bad, will be a factor in the governor's race in November and on the ballot directly as well in the form of the charter schools initiative.
The hot issue is also on the ballot tonight.
Stand for Children, the hardline education reform group, has contributed $30,000 to primary contender Stephanie Bowman, a Democrat in the crowded field of Democrats running for an open state house seat in the 11th Congressional District.
Bowman a former Port of Tacoma and Seattle Chamber staffer, is running against Seattle Port Commissioner Rob Holland, dentist Bobby Virk, and teacher Stephen Bergquist.
Her showing tonight will be a barometer on the ed reform agenda.
A more direct referendum on ed reform is the race in the 1st Congressional District. State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe (D-1, Bothell) is the chair of the senate K-12 education committee and got into it this year with ed reformers such as state Sen. Rodney Tom (D-48, Bellevue) when she was accused of holding up a teachers' evaluation bill.
Stand for Children's nemesis, the Washington Education Association (the teachers' union), has given nearly $50,000 to McAuliffe in independent expenditures.
Two ed reformers are coming after her in the primary: a Democrat, Guy Palumbo, and a Republican, Dawn McCravey.
Tonight's numbers may hint at how the issue will play in November.
The Washington State Wire has a big article on that race here.
