PubliCalendar: South Lake Union Heights, Rainier Valley Eats

By Derek Tsang July 23, 2012

Our daily picks for political nerds:

South Lake Union Rezoning Forum, Tonight, 5:30 pm, South Lake Union Discovery Center (corner of Denny and Westlake), 101 Westlake Avenue N. Free.

Tonight in South Lake Union, Downtown Seattle Association President and CEO Kate Joncas will take the microphone at a public forum to explain Mayor McGinn’s proposed rezoning plan
for the burgeoning neighborhood.

The plan, which has been in the works since 2008, would shatter the neighborhood’s height ceiling. Buildings of up to 400 feet could rise in select parts of South Lake Union, with development projects already in the pipeline counting on the more lenient restrictions.

Joncas, Seattle City Council member Richard Conlin, and Seattle Planning Director Marshall Foster will be answering questions about the possibility of new neighbors (an estimated 12,000 new households), new jobs, and a new skyline.

It might take all three to adequately explain the intricacies of the plan, which includes more stringent restrictions for office towers than for residential buildings, different height caps for different sets of blocks, and financing for both rural preservation and new infrastructure. Some residents have taken to calling the plan “economic apartheid” in online comments, while others are viewing it as a common sense win-win.

Don’t bother dressing up – the plan is for an informal evening, accompanied by hors d’ouevres, wine, and beer.

The short notice we’re giving you on the rezoning forum is the exception, not the rule. Here’s a full day’s notice for this one:

Columbia City Chow Down to Benefit Rainier Valley Food Bank, Tomorrow, 5-9 pm, 4908 Rainier Ave S. $50.

Rainier Valley Food Bank is hosting their crucial annual fundraiser, the Columbia City Chow Down
. It features a smorgasbord of different cuisine: soul food, ice cream, pizza, African, and spicy Japanese are just the start. The proceeds will help the food bank continue to put food in the mouths of nearly 11,000 every month.
