Occupy Seattle Sex Assault, Inquest in Belltown, and More

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee November 22, 2011

Today in Fuzz:  Police investigating sexual assault at Occupy Seattle; inquest in Belltown police shooting; and possible homicide in Eastlake.

1) Seattle police are investigating whether a woman was sexually assaulted in a tent at Occupy Seattle's camp at Seattle Central Community College last Friday.

Officers were called to the camp on Broadway and E. Pine St. around 9pm after a woman returned to her tent and found another woman laying on the ground, passed out and naked from the waist down.

Witnesses saw a man leaving the tent moments earlier, and police are now investigating whether the woman was sexually assaulted.

The woman was taken to the hospital, and SPD's sexual assault unit is handling the case.

Police don't believe it's connected to another rape on the north end of Capitol Hill several days earlier.

2) King County Executive Dow Constantine has ordered an inquest into the fatal police shooting of a homicide suspect in Belltown last month.

On October 23, Seattle Police Department homicide detective Russ Weklych fatally shot Eric Blaine Evans, who was suspected of fatally stabbing an 84-year-old man at a storage facility in Interbay.

Police say Weklych and another homicide detective spotted Evans in Belltown, and Weklych opened fire on Evans when he tried to grab the detective's gun.

Inquests are fairly routine for fatal police shootings, so there's not necessarily any reason to believe this shooting violated police procedure, but we'll follow it as it happens.

3) Police are investigating the death of a woman at an Eastlake apartment as a possible homicide.

The 37-year-old woman's teenage son found the woman in her bedroom just before 1:00 am on November 12th, according to deparment records, which indicate the woman had scrapes and marks on her neck.

Police haven't definitively ruled the case a homicide, and tell PubliCola the case is being investigated as a "suspicious death."
