Attempted Dognapping In South Lake Union

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee October 4, 2011

A bystander armed with a camera phone foiled an attempted dognapping in South Lake Union Saturday morning.

Police say a 90-year-old man left his retirement community around 11:00 am and was walking his dog near Denny Ave. and Pontius St. when another man ran up to him, shouting, "that's my dog. that's my dog" and grabbed the dog's leash.

The victim held on to the leash, and the suspect shoved him to the ground.

While on the ground, the 90-year-old continued to struggle with the suspect over the dog and was about to lose his grip on the leash when a bystander approached the suspect and "threatened to take the suspect's picture."

The suspect ran away, and the victim returned to his retirement community, where nurses treated him for injuries to his knee and hand.

Police searched the neighborhood, but weren't able to find the dognapping suspect.
