Today in Fuzz: Assault charges filed against a man with connection to Seattle terror suspects, details on a Central District shooting, the latest Backpage.com development, and tweets from Taser.
1) A man charged for attempting to run two marines off the road in Lynnwood in July is under investigating by federal authorities for possible ties to two men suspected of planning an attack on a Seattle military facility.
Today, King County prosecutors charged Michael Dale McCright with assault after he allegedly tried to sideswipe two Marines on I-5 on July 12th.
Court records says when McCright pulled alongside the the Marines on the freeway, "his eyes widened and he appeared to become angry."
McCright allegedly swerved into their vehicle and forced the men off the road. He then pulled in front of them and slammed on his brakes.
The Marines wrote down the man's plate and called 911. Authorities arrested McCright last week in Seattle.
According to court records, authorities are investigating McCright's "possible connection to domestic terrorism." McCright—who , court records say, also goes by the name Mikhial Jihad—previously had several contacts with Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, one of two men accused of planning an attack on the Military Entrance Processing Station in Georgetown.
McCright already has two strikes—including convictions for robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and resisting arrest—and could potentially face life in prison without parole if convicted.
McCright is being held on $2 million bail at the King County Jail
2) Police records indicate a round of gunfire in the Central District earlier this month was the result of a dispute over a woman.
According to SPD, a mom called police a day after the shooting to say her 18-year-old son has been involved in a feud with another man over a girl the men had both previously dated.
The mother told police she had received information that the man had pulled up next to her son—who was in a white Mercedes with four other people—at 26th and Cherry and opened fire.
The gunman then fled the scene in a black Dodge Charger. No one was injured in the shooting. The victim's mother requested a call from SPD's gang unit. Her son apparently didn't want to talk to police.
3) Washington AG Rob McKenna and his coalition of attorneys general have granted Village Voice Media/Backpage.com a nine daystay of execution extension to shut down their escort ads or turn over records proving the company is actively working to prevent child prostitution on its site. The AGs had originally given Backpage until tomorrow
to comply.
4) And in tangentially law-enforcement-related news, Taser International—which makes, y'know, Tasers—went krayzeeee on Twitter today after a bunch of news outlets reported that a Dallas Cowboys fan used a Taser on a Marine in a brawl at the Jets/Cowboys game on 9/11.
What made Taser go tweet-bananas? The man used a "generic stun gun," not a Taser:
