The Afternoon Fuzz

Here's the latest from the cop beat:

In an improbable drug raid, an SPD officer with a marijuana allergy and another SPD cop without a sense of smell led the charge in a raid on a medical marijuana grow-op at a Magnolia home last month.

In August, neighbors contacted police about a possible grow operation in the home on 35th and W. Elmore after they regularly smelled a "pungent" odor of marijuana outside the home, and regularly saw two men arrive at the home, back a pickup truck up against the home's garage, and cover the garage's door frame with black plastic.

A San Bernadino County Sheriff's Department narcotics officer also apparently visited a friend in the neighborhood and recommended they call police about a possible drug operation at the home.

Police received further confirmation of a possible grow-op from a neighbor who was "familiar with the distinct odor of marijuana from his younger years in college."

Officers went to the house where they found "numerous clues" indicating there was a grow operation inside the home.
The power meter on the outside of the house indicated the home was using 15 times as much power as the surrounding homes.

Officer Steve Ives, who police records say is "allergic" to marijuana, got a headache from the smell of pot outside the home. However, his partner, Zsolt Dornay "was unable to smell the odor as [his] nose has been damaged from multiple injuries."

On August 31st, police knocked on the door of the home, and eventually broke down the front door. Inside, records say, police found "an extravagant and quite large marijuana grow operation."

"It was obvious nobody lived in the house, as there were no beds," police records say.

Police found a notice inside the home that three people "associated with the house were medical marijuana users."

However, the officers report turning up more than the 72 ounces allowed for medical patients, or 45 plants allowed in pot co-op gardens, finding  67 marijuana plants and 21 pounds of dried, bagged pot in the basement.

Officers took 22 plants—they left 45 inside the home, police records say—and took the 21 pounds of packaged pot.

"It would be unfathomable for a mere three people to consume such a large amount of marijuana in 3 months," a police report says.
