Police Arrest Man Wounded In South End Shootout

By Josh Feit September 8, 2011

A man wounded in a shootout at a South Seattle store last week has been booked into the King County Jail for assault and a weapons violation after police found surveillance footage of the shooting, which shows the 28-year-old man firing the first shots in a gunfight.

According to police, at least two men opened fire on each other inside a clothing store near Rainier Ave S. and S. Andover St around 4:00 pm on September 2.

Later that afternoon, around 4:45 pm, a 28-year-old was brought in to Harborview suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. According to police documents, a bullet pierced one of the man's lungs.

Police interviewed a friend of the wounded man, who initially refused to give detectives details about the shooting. Eventually, however,  "he said that he spoke with God and made the decision it was time to tell the truth," police records say.

He then told detectives he was in a clothing shop—Kicks and Tees—in South Seattle, buying clothes for a Young Jeezy show later that night, when someone fired several shots into the store, striking his friend.

He said the suspect or suspects, who he told police he could not identify, fled in a silver '90s Buick or Nissan.

Detectives unsuccessfully tried to reach Kicks and Tees' owners to search the store for evidence,  and around 12:30 am, police broke down a back door and searched the store, where they found .40 caliber shell casing.

Detectives also checked a video surveillance system, which showed the wounded man firing a pistol out of the store before he was shot in the chest by someone outside the business.

The video also captured the store owner picking up shell casings from the floor of the business and putting them in a plastic bag. Officers found the plastic bag containing shell casings in a Dumpster behind the store.

On September 6th, four days after the shooting, the wounded man in the incident called police and asked officers to return his "grill"—a metal plate molded to fit his teeth—which police were holding as evidence in the shooting.

Detectives told the man to come down to the Justice Center—police headquarters—to speak with them. When the man arrived, they arrested him. He's currently being held at the King County Justice Center on $100,000 bail.

He then told police the man he'd shot at had tried to kill him, but said he wasn't a "snitch" and noted that he "he was going to jail for a long time," SPD records say.

Police records say the man is a convicted felon, and is unable to legally possess a firearm. He's currently being held at the King County Jail on $100,000 bail awaiting charges.
