Anti-Israel Ads Not Okay for Seattle, but Up and Running in NYC

By Josh Feit September 21, 2011

Remember the ads that King County Executive Dow Constantine thought were too controversial to run on Metro buses?

Late last year, The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign tried to run bus ads that were critical of US financial aid to Israel because of Israel's policy in Gaza. As with anything involving Israel, temperatures rose, people got uncomfortable, and Constantine decided to reject the ads which had originally been approved to run on 12 buses.

The group sued, but lost in Federal court in February.

It turns out
a similar ad campaign is now up and running in subways in New York City, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco.

An advertising campaign urging an end to U.S. military aid to Israel has been met with criticism from some New York lawmakers, while activists say they plan on spreading their message throughout the country.

The billboards, found throughout subway systems in major U.S. cities including New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, show a Palestinian and an Israeli standing together with their children. The billboard reads “Be on our side – we are on the side of truth and justice” and “End U.S. military aid to Israel.”

Be On Our Side plan to expand their ad campaign to more cities, as well as college campuses. Meanwhile, some pro-Israeli groups say they plan to launch their own campaign.

Similar campaign posters, sponsored by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign, were removed from Seattle bus stops in April after they were deemed offensive, following citizen complaints, according to the Seattle Times. The billboards read "Equal rights for Palestinians: Stop funding the Israel military."
