Afternoon Jolt: 160 Low Income Tenants

By Afternoon Jolt September 9, 2011

Today's winners: The residents at the Downtowner Apts.

The Tenants Union has staved of eviction notices for 160 tenants at the low-income Downtowner Apartments in the International District.

The tenants filed  a lawsuit against the Bellevue-based landlords Martin and Howard Seelig for not signing a contract that would allow the tenants to use Section 8 vouchers made available by HUD to help pay rent. Unable to use the vouchers, the tenants faced eviction.

Faced with the lawsuit, the landlords have dropped the eviction proceedings and have entered into talks with the Tenants Union.

Tenants Union organizer Emily Murphy says:

While this is a great stop gap win for low-income families, the bottom line is that we will not rest until the owner has signed the ... contract to accept Section 8 tenants, or be forced to do so by court order.

We have a call in to the owers.
