SEIU Initiative Makes the Ballot

By Josh Feit August 2, 2011

I-1163, the Service Employees International Union 775 measure to mandate—one more time—training and standards for long term in-home health care workers (SEIU 775's rank and file), qualified for the ballot.

Measures need 241,000 valid signatures to qualify. SEIU turned in 340,000 signatures.

The original 2008 initiative won with 72 percent, but the legislature has refused to fund the mandate. SEIU spent $1 million dollars collecting signatures.

In addition to the SEIU measure, two other initiatives made the ballot: Tim Eyman's initiative to regulate tolling, I-1125 (watch for tomorrow's ThinkTank on that) and Costco's liquor privatization initiative, I-1183.
