How "Colorful" is the WA State Legislature?
Following up this morning's Fizz item about the AP report
that found lacking numbers of non-whites in state government (5 percent of Gov. Gregoire's not-so-diverse Cabinet and 18 percent of state employees), we did some bean counting of our own.
We went a step further and counted the number of state reps and senators who aren't white. The final count: ten (five Asian American reps, three Hispanic Americans, one Native American and one African American).
Here's the roster:
This crew makes up 6.8 percent of the Washington state legislature, compared to 22.7 percent of Washingtonians who identify as nonwhite (including those of mixed race).
