Bomb Squad Recovers World War II Mortar Round From Magnolia Home

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee July 27, 2011

SPD's bomb squad was called out to a Magnolia home Tuesday afternoon after a man found a World War II-era mortar round while cleaning out his parents' basement.

Police say the man was cleaning out the basement of the home near 38th Ave W and W Armour St around noon, when he came across something that looked like a "large bullet."

It turns out that "large bullet" was a Japanese knee mortar round.

The bomb squad removed the mortar from the home.

We've heard mixed information about whether the mortar round was live or not.
