Beats in Belltown

By Josh Feit July 25, 2011

I did not go to the Capitol Hill Block Party this weekend. Apparently, I'm the only one in the universe who didn't. And worse, I missed a great set from The Head and The Heart, according to a friend who was at their mobbed show.

But you missed Brain Fruit at the Rendezvous in Belltown on Friday night. I know you missed it because I was one of just 10 people there. Brain Fruit is an experimental computer sine wave and beats duo. As opposed to just sitting behind a laptop as if they're Googling recipes—a real problem with this genre—the guys in Brain Fruit (selling tickets at the door earlier in the night) shimmied and smiled as their digital meditations took shape, and took off, turning algorithm loops into three-dimensional star fields.

Abstract as it was, Brain Fruit brings a pop sensibility (or at least a sense of order and timing) to their experiments. The result, backed by shifting dubstep rhythms, was a mesmerizing soundboard suite.
