Afternoon Jolt: Democrats Lose, McGinn Wins
Today's Losers: The Washington State Democrats
In the past 24 hours, US Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA, 8 )—who may already benefit from redistricting if his Eastside suburban Seattle district ends up jettisoning more-cosmopolitan suburbs like Bellevue, making his district more reliably Republican—has solidified his reputation as a green vote in Congress, breaking ranks with his party on back-to-back environmental votes.
Yesterday, he joined Democrats in voting against a Republican measure to do away with light bulb efficiency standards. And today, he broke ranks with his party and voted against gutting 1977's federal Clean Water Act.
The Seattle Times recently ran a piece , to the chagrin of the Washington State Republicans, revealing the sad truth that they didn't have any obvious challengers to take on two-term US Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA).
Well, the same thing can be said about the state Democrats' prospects against Reichert. They're looking increasingly difficult.
Today's winner: Mayor Mike McGinn.
In addition to getting the support of likely 2013 mayoral challenger Tim Burgess and sometime-political opponent Pete Holmes for his proposal to change state rules to allow bars to serve alcohol all night, McGinn has the ear of the state Liquor Control Board, whose newest member, former Spokane-area state Sen. Chris Marr, says the three-member body is open to the idea of allowing later bar hours in Seattle.
"We have an open mind toward looking at the proposal if it moves forward," Marr tells PubliCola. "The consideration would be on a pilot basis rather than necessarily changing the rules. Statewide, Seattle is the only city that has come forward that has suggested they would benefit from this legislation."
Marr says his major concern will be public safety and noise in neighborhoods like Belltown.
