Officer Opens Fire In ID Shootout

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee June 29, 2011

On 6/28/11, just shortly before midnight, an officer was in a parking lot monitoring two groups of people, who had just left a nearby lounge at 7th and S. Lane St.  The groups were meandering about in the middle of the street on 7th Ave between Dearborn and S. Lane St, when the officer observed the groups arguing back and forth. During the argument two males, one from each group began exchanging gun fire. The officer saw what was happening and fired upon both suspects. One suspect fled the area and the second suspect was taken into custody without incident. Two handguns were recovered near the scene.

CSI, Homicide, Gang Unit detectives and K-9 responded to the scene. At this point it is unknown what precipitated the argument and subsequent shooting. Detectives transported a host of witnesses to Police Headquarters (HQ) for questioning. The adult male suspect was also transported to HQ where he will be interviewed and subsequently booked into King County Jail.

The fleeing suspect was described as a black male, 6’0 feet tall, wearing a dark top.

This is an open and active investigation and no additional details are available.

A source tells us the man arrested by police last night may not have started the fight. It appears police haven't yet booked him into jail.
