Gregoire Says No to Third Term

By Morning Fizz June 13, 2011

1. The Fizz repeats what it said on Friday
: Gov. Chris Gregoire will make an announcement today. Fizz's sources tell us she's bowing out.

Sources also tell the AP
Gregoire is not running.

UPDATE:
Gregoire is out. Here's her statement.

2. Speaking of the governor's race: In case you missed it, on Saturday, after the Mainstream Republicans of Washington gave Rob McKenna their early endorsement, we published a story asking whether McKenna is mainstream when it comes to social issues.

3. Fizz thinks Erica missed the significance of the footnote she included in her Friday "Filing Day" report
about Seattle City Council candidates. While her big campaign finance update did note that Tom Rasmussen drew a last-minute challenger, Dale Pusey, giving Rasmussen two challengers, she left out the conspiracy theory. [pullquote]That's a slight conundrum for Rasmussen because the primary comes with the tunnel referendum.[/pullquote]

Facing two candidates makes the August 16 primary relevant for Rasmussen (with just one opponent, he was guaranteed to go through). That's a slight conundrum for Rasmussen because the primary comes with the tunnel referendum. Rasmussen is an ardent tunnel supporter.

Fizz doesn't think Rasmussen will lose in the primary; neither his first opponent, Sandy Cioffi, or Pusey, are big threats. But with the three-way contest happening along with Ref. 1 (the tunnel referendum), Rasmussen will feel slightly more pain on the pesky tunnel issue when anti-tunnel voters will be out in full force.

Cioffi, for one, is against the tunnel.

4.
Speaking of conspiracy theories: Earlier this year we noted that Seattle City Council member Bruce Harrell, also up for reelection this year, came out with a proposal to give low-income students free laptops and $10 a month in wi-fi services at home provided by Comcast.

Campaign finance reports show that Comcast and a couple of Comcast executives have contributed a total of $2,100 to Harrell over the last year.

And while one other candidate, Rasmussen, also got one Comcast contribution ($500), Harrell's Comcast contributions all come from the local office in Redmond and local executives. Rasmussen's is from out of state.

5. Speaking of the city council races, the PI.com has a good report on Friday's council candidate forum at City Hall.
