Tacoma News Tribune: Gregoire Likes Revised Med Marijuana Bill; GOP Says It's Not a Priority
Tacoma News Tribune reporter Jordan Schrader reports
that Gov. Chris Gregoire has given the thumbs up to state Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles' (D-36, Ballard) revised medical marijuana bill, which addresses Gregoire's concerns (she vetoed the bill last week) about state employees running afoul of federal law. She didn't like putting state bureaucrats in the position of overseeing a dispensary system for a controlled substance.
Sen. Kohl-Welles rewrite puts local jurisdictions in the position of overseeing the dispensaries.
There's a catch, though.
While Republicans, at least seven on the senate side and a couple on the house side, went for the first bill, GOP leadership is now balking.

But before the bill can be heard in special session, Gregoire said she wants the leaders of the Legislature's four party caucuses to agree to take it up. "I’ve indicated to the senator I'm a go," she said, "but you’ve got to get the other 'four corners' to say they're a go as well."
At least one corner is balking: House GOP Leader Richard DeBolt said in a statement, "Passing legislation dealing with marijuana laws is not the priority for House Republicans. Our priority for the special session is to balance the state’s budget without increasing taxes and to adopt workers’ compensation reforms to help get Washington working again."
