GreenFest 2011

By Erica C. Barnett May 19, 2011

A lot of folks have groused  about Dennis Kucinich's controversial visit to Washington State. He's pondering a run here. Love him or hate him, the official reason he's coming to twon is pretty cool: GreenFestival 2011, where he'll be headlining along with Democracy Now host Amy Goodman.

Hokey as some of the exhibitors can be (how different can a dozen types of hemp bars be?), and as woo-woo as some of the talks inevitably are (Green Dating? The Happiness Circle?) I go every year and always learn something new.

Two years ago, it was mushroom guru Paul Stamets, who knows more than anyone about mycology.

This year, one highlight (in addition to Kucinich) could be Edward Humes, who wrote the book Force of Nature: The Unlikely Story of Wal-Mart's Green Revolution.

Also interesting: city council president Richard Conlin, the council's biggest recent defender of the deep-bore tunnel, will talk about what he's done to "make Seattle a more sustainable city."

Even if neither of those guys wet your whistle, there are literally hundreds of speakers and exhibitors, and admission's just 10 bucks (five of which you can use toward buying green stuff from exhibitors). Check out the whole schedule and lineup here.
