This post has been updated with new fundraising totals.
March fundraising totals for city council incumbents and challengers are rolling in all day today, and so far, incumbents' continue to far out-raise their challengers. The money race is important because any unknown candidate hoping to take down an incumbent will have to dramatically boost their name recognition---and that, like it or not, takes money. So far, only one candidate shows much momentum in that direction.
Here's a look at the total so far.
In Position 1, council member Jean Godden raised $17,386 in March. Overall, Godden has raised $108,776 in all, and has $57,959 on hand. Only one of Godden's four challengers---deputy King County prosecutor Maurice Classen, who has reported raising $59,440, with $49,364 on hand---has come within striking distance of Godden. Challenger Bobby Forch raised $12,375, bringing his total to $18,560, with $7,600 on hand, and challenger Michael Taylor-Judd raised $515, for a total of $6,420 and negative $3,050 cash on hand. Godden's other opponent, David Schraer, has not yet filed final reports for March.
In Position 3, where incumbent Bruce Harrell has not yet filed his fundraising totals for March, challenger Brad Meacham reported raising just $4,190, bringing his grand total to $27,770, with $13,141 on hand. As of the end of February, Harrell had raised $135,355, with $101,518 on hand.
In Position 5, where local indie filmmaker Sandy Cioffi just filed to challenge incumbent Tom Rasmussen last week, Rasmussen reported raising $39,885 last month, bringing his total to $219,122, with $173,867 on hand.
In Position 7, incumbent Tim Burgess reported raising $6,710 in March, bringing his total to $163,880, with $116,652 on hand. His only opponent, Darryl Carter Metcalf, has not reported any contributions since filing to run against Burgess last year.
In Position 9, incumbent Sally Clark raised $10,700 in March, bringing her total to $144,483, with $110,351 on hand. Neither of her opponents---SCAN TV director Dian Ferguson and paralegal Fathi Karshie---have reported any contributions for March yet.
