Extra Fizz: Student Lobbyist Heads ASUW Slate

By Josh Feit April 11, 2011

Andrew Lewis, a 21-year-old history and political science major at the UW, who has emerged this year as scrappy lobbyist in Olympia fighting to exempt UW from Seattle's proposed commercial parking tax, is running for president of the Associated Students of the University of Washington. Lewis ran Seattle City Council member Nick Licata's successful 2009 campaign when he was just 19. (He had been interning in council member Sally Clark's office, where he met Licata.)

ASUW is the student government association that represents every student at the U.W.—advocating for students on campus and at the local and state level. ASUW, with 60 employees and a $1 million budget, also does things such as programming events including concerts and speakers.

The vote happens online in early May. Lewis, who grew up in Ballard, has the sole endorsement of the current ASUW president Madeleine McKenna, daughter of Republican Washington State Attorney General, Rob McKenna. Lewis is quick to point out that Madeleine is a Democrat.

Lewis and his slate released a video announcing their candidacy this weekend.

Past ASUW presidents include Madeleine's dad, King County Council Member Bob Ferguson, and former Seattle City Council member Judy Nicastro.
