Afternoon Fizz: Mallahans for Burgess, City Employees Against Godden

By Erica C. Barnett April 11, 2011

City council member Tim Burgess has received $1,650 in campaign contributions so far from former mayoral candidate Joe Mallahan---who made it through the 2009 primary but lost to Mike McGinn—and from Mallahan's brother and sister-in-law, John and Sheila Mallahan.

Burgess is the only incumbent to whom Joe Mallahan has contributed (he's also maxed out to Jean Godden opponent Maurice Classen and Bruce Harrell opponent Brad Meacham). Burgess also happens to already top the list of those most frequently mentioned as challengers to Mayor McGinn in 2013.

Burgess says he met James (Jim) Mallahan and his wife Sheila when they offered, last year, to help raise money for The Bridge, a safe haven for prostituted children run by SafeHaven. "He raised several hundred thousand dollars, and The Bridge is up and running today largely because of his efforts," Burgess says. He says Joe Mallahan's recent campaign contribution came "completely out of the blue," and adds that he hasn't talked to Mallahan since the 2009 mayoral election.

We have an email out to Mallahan to find out why he contributed to Burgess.

Meanwhile, city transportation employee Bobby Forch, one of four candidates challenging city council member Jean Godden, has received eight contributions so far, totaling $800, from current city employees (two of them from his department), plus $700 from his former boss, ousted SDOT director Grace Crunican. Overall, Forch has been raising money at a brisk pace over the last month, raising $16,575 since the beginning of March, nearly three times his $6,185 he had raised by the end of February.

Godden has raised $108,776 in all, and has $57,959 on hand. Deputy King County prosecutor Maurice Classen, who's also challenging Godden, has reported raising $59,440, with $49,364 on hand—has come within striking distance of Godden. Of Godden's money so far, $1,549 has come from five city employees, including Godden's three legislative assistants, and Classen has not received any money yet from city of Seattle employees.
