I wrote a piece for Dan Bertolet's new urbanist web site yesterday. Except, rather than all the urbanist policy stuff about FARs and TOD and VMT, I wrote about the importance of the DJs at the Lo-Fi Gallery.
Really, what's ultimately sustainable about cities is the art they produce. The budget policy staffer who’s crunching data on floor area ratios and the laptop DJ who wants to cue up the perfect dance floor mix on a Saturday night at Lo-Fi are both trying to answer the same questions: How do I make this a fantastic place to be? And how do I make it last?
