Lyrical Love at the Northwest Film Forum

By Anand Balasubrahmanyan March 21, 2011

At age 21, filmmaker Xavier Dolan has drawn “next-big-thing” reviews from the New York Times and Roger Ebert. Dolan's new film, Heartbeats
, lives up to these high expectations recalling the lyrical camera work of Wong Kar-wai, the bitchy scripts of Jean Luc Godard, and the city beat of Michelangelo Antonioni.

Heartbeats
centers on a young Montreal love triangle. Emotions simmer and mope while Dolan, who also stars, frames the turbulence with hyper-stylized images of obsession. Dolan understands the way we torment ourselves when we're in love—and the result is a passionate film made for fans of both the French New Wave and watching pretty people kiss.

7:00pm, March 21, Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Avenue, $9
