The full city council just unanimously voted to put a proposed $231 property renewal of the city's Families and Education levy on the November ballot. The proposal represents roughly a doubling of the amount a typical Seattle homeowner will pay for early-learning and youth services to an average of $124 per year, compared to $65 a year under the last levy, adopted in 2004. Over seven years, that’s $868, compared to an average of $455 over the levy adopted in 2004. Put another way, the new levy would cost 27 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, compared to 19 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for the previous levy.
"I am just very happy about this," council member Bruce Harrell said before the vote. "Now the work begins."
The Seattle Times reported this morning on a new Elway Poll that shows two-thirds of Seattle residents support renewing the levy. However, that number falls to just one-third at the level the council approved for the ballot today.
